West Java Pantura Pond Revitalization Program Announcement
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) strategic program, namely the revitalization of fish ponds on the north coast (Pantura) of West Java, has now entered the public consultation stage for the preparation of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study.
According to Indonesia Maritime News, the West Java Pantura Pond Revitalization Program aims to increase productivity from 0.6 tons/ha/year to 144 tons/ha/year, with a total production of 1.18 million tons per year and an economic value of around Rp28.2 trillion. The program is also projected to create around 132,000 new jobs in both the upstream and downstream sectors.
While technical preparations are underway, the initial phase of the program will concentrate on Karawang Regency. Public consultation is important to make sure every aspect of the environment is taken into consideration from the beginning of the planning stage. Director General of Aquaculture Tb Haeru Rahayu said that an EIA is very important to determine the potential environmental impacts that may appear so that anticipatory measures can be determined from the start.
Tebe explained that this revitalization program not only emphasizes production aspects but also the principle of environmental sustainability. The construction of wastewater treatment plants (IPAL), green areas, and environmentally friendly aquaculture systems are integral parts of this program.
Director of Marine Fisheries at KKP, Ikhsan Kamil, said that public consultations were held to gather community input on the potential impacts, both positive and negative, of the revitalization program. The Head of the Environmental Impact Assessment System Working Group at the Ministry of Environment, Heri Subanul Hoer, also emphasized that public consultations were an effort to ensure that the EIA was prepared in a transparent and participatory manner.
