KKP and SEAFDEC Hold Regional Workshop to Address Microplastic Pollution in Southeast Asian Waters

The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has decided to collaborate with the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center/Inland Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (SEAFDEC/IFRDMD) in organizing a regional workshop entitled “Workshop on Mitigation and Strategic Policy for Combating Microplastic Pollution for Marine and Freshwater Fisheries in the Southeast Asia Region.” The event will take place over two days on July 2–3, 2025, in Jakarta.

The workshop serves as a forum for exchanging ideas and experiences among Southeast Asian countries, including Japan, which is supporting the initiative through the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF). Approximately 40 participants from different countries attended to develop strategies for reducing plastic pollution, both in marine and freshwater environments, through policy approaches and cross-border collaboration.

The Head of the Marine and Fisheries Human Resources Development and Extension Agency (BPPSDM KP), I Nyoman Radiarta, said that microplastic pollution is a cross-border issue that requires immediate attention and strong regional cooperation. He emphasized the importance of preserving aquatic ecosystems as the foundation for sustainable development in the marine and fisheries sector.

“The urgency of addressing microplastics in the ocean has been widely discussed, but freshwater systems also require equal attention, especially since they support inland fisheries and local communities,” he said.

As a concrete manifestation of national commitment, the KKP has launched various initiatives, including the “Month of Love for the Sea” (BCL) campaign, which involves the public in marine cleanup efforts, management of abandoned, derelict, and lost fishing gear (ADLFG), waste management at fishing ports, and inclusive water conservation education.

SEAFDEC Deputy Secretary-General Koichi Tahara hopes that these activities will strengthen cooperation between countries and produce strategic policies that have a real impact. “We want to build a joint mechanism to monitor and reduce plastic pollution in the Southeast Asian region,” he said.

Previously, Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono emphasized that microplastics pose a serious threat to the sustainability of fish populations. Therefore, strategic and collaborative steps like this are expected to promote the creation of healthier marine and aquatic ecosystems for future generations.

Zooplankton dan Perannya Mencegah Pemanasan Global

Siapa sangka jika zooplankton, hewan sangat kecil yang tidak bisa dilihat mata telanjang (mahluk mikroskopis) berperan penting dalam mencegah pemanasan global. Namun, peran penting mahluk ini terancam tidak maksimal akibat ulah manusia.

Pentingnya peran zooplankton dalam mencegah pemanasan global merupakan hasil penelitian yang dipublikasikan dalam jurnal ilmiah Limnology and Oceanography. Para ilmuwan dalam penelitian itu menekankan pentingnya memasukkan peran zooplankton dalam model prediksi iklim masa depan.
“Jika mahluk ini tidak ada, tingkat CO2 atmosfer bisa dua kali lipat dari sekarang,” ungkap Prof Atkinson.
Meskipun ukuran zooplankton sangat kecil, mereka memakan fitoplankton yang telah menyerap karbon dioksida melalui fotosintesis. Karbon ini disimpan dalam bentuk lemak di tubuh zooplankton.
"Lemak mereka seperti baterai. Saat mereka menghabiskan musim dingin di laut dalam, mereka hanya diam dan membakar karbon ini secara perlahan,” jelas Prof Daniel Mayor dari Universitas Exeter.
Proses alami ini disebut pompa migrasi vertikal musiman. Saat zooplankton tenggelam ke kedalaman 500 meter atau lebih, mereka membawa karbon dari permukaan laut dan melepaskannya jauh di dalam laut.
Butuh ratusan tahun sebelum karbon tersebut kembali ke atmosfer.Peneliti memperkirakan zooplankton memindahkan 65 juta ton karbon per tahun ke laut dalam, setara dengan emisi dari 55 juta mobil bensin dalam setahun. 
Sayangnya, keberadaan zooplankton kini terancam oleh pemanasan laut akibat perubahan iklim, penangkapan krill komersial secara besar-besaran, cuaca ekstrem dan gangguan lapisan laut.
“Perubahan iklim, gangguan pada lapisan laut, dan cuaca ekstrem semuanya merupakan ancaman,” ujar Prof Angus Atkinson, salah satu peneliti.
Krill, sebagai salah satu jenis zooplankton, telah ditangkap hampir setengah juta ton pada tahun 2020 untuk keperluan industri. Meski legal secara internasional, praktik ini dikecam banyak aktivis lingkungan. (*)

KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya Sinks in Bali Strait, Dozens of Passengers Still Missing

A passenger motor vessel (KMP) named Tunu Pratama Jaya was reported to have sunk in the waters of the Bali Strait on Wednesday night, July 2, 2025. The vessel, which was en route from Ketapang Port in Banyuwangi to Gilimanuk Port in Jembrana, Bali, was carrying 53 passengers, 12 crew members, and 22 vehicles.

Wahyu Setia Budi, Coordinator of the Banyuwangi Search and Rescue (SAR) Post, explained that the KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya departed from Ketapang Port around 10:56 PM local time. However, before reaching Gilimanuk, the vessel sank around 11:35 PM local time. The incident occurred on a busy maritime route connecting Java Island and Bali Island.

Upon receiving reports of the sinking, a team from the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) in Banyuwangi was immediately deployed to the location to conduct rescue operations. The SAR team deployed a Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) to reach the incident area and search for the victims.

Unfortunately, the search efforts were not easy. The SAR team search was hindered by bad weather and waves reaching up to about 2.5 meters. Not only Basarnas Banyuwangi, but the search efforts also involved the Marine and Coastal Guard Unit (KPLP), as well as Basarnas from Denpasar and the Jembrana SAR Post.

“However, as of now, we have not found all the passengers on the boat. Weather and waves remain the main obstacles,” Wahyu stated in his remarks.

The exact cause of the boat’s sinking is still unknown. Authorities are currently focusing on evacuation and search efforts. As of this report, rescue operations are still ongoing with the hope of finding all victims safe.
